#001: Burning Fat

Hey Austin,

What is the best way to lose fat?

This is probably one of the most common questions I get asked at the gym and I’m sorry to have to tell you this but there isn’t one single super-secret exercise that will obliterate your unwanted fat…

Maximize your calorie burn with high intensity training

Exercises that maximize calorie burn are better suited for fat loss than non-weight-bearing activities that only use a few muscles. So, it only makes sense that activities which incorporate more muscle groups will burn more calories per minute and If you add weights to those exercises then you can increase your calorie burn even more.

Cool facts bro, but what exercises should I be doing to maximize calorie burn?

I’ve listed three of my favorite way to burn calories below,

1. Tabata Training

Tabata is a form of HIIT (high intensity internal training). It’s a four-minute workout consisting of 8 rounds of 20 seconds of work at maximum effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest. And don’t worry if that sounds too confusing – there’s an app for that. I use HIITTimer from the apple app store (it’s 100% free). This is how I like to start and end my workouts.

2. Body Weight Exercises

Bodyweight training is another excellent way to burn calories. It also goes hand-in-hand with building strength and flexibility. Completing bodyweight exercises utilize a full range of motion which engage a large number of muscles ranging from primary muscles to stabilizing muscles. By engaging multiple muscles, you are maximizing your calorie burning efforts. Plus, it can lead to improved posture and might reduce the chance of exercise-related injury. It’s a total win-win! I like to keep it simple with pushups, pullups, handstands and dips.

3. Maintaining a High Heart Rate

Keeping your heart rate up is one of the best indicators that your body is working hard and burning calories. The best way to do this is to replace your rest times with a low weight, high motion exercise. Between my heavy weight reps I like to work in step ups, pullups and arm circles. If you keep moving you will keep your heart rate up, which will allow you to continually burn calories.

Final Thoughts

No one likes stubborn unwanted fat and unfortunately there isn’t a simple super secret solution to get rid of it. The only way to get rid of fat is to burn calories and here are some of my favourite methods for maximizing those efforts,

  • Tabata Training

  • Body Weight Exercises

  • Maintaining a High Heart Rate
