Where do Gay Dads Get Their Babies From in 2024?

This question always makes me laugh, especially when it’s worded so casually.

Do y’all think there’s some sort of buy-a-baby store for the gays?

We just placed an order online… No, no, no.

It was a 2 year process that involved a couple amazing women.

For those of you who don’t know, my husband and I had our daughter Maya through surrogacy.

It was a two-step process which involved creating embryos, with the help of an egg donor, and then pregnancy, through the help of a surrogate.

We spent months searching for the perfect egg donor — someone who shared similar traits with us that could provide half our child's genetics.

To make our dream of having a family come true, we worked with two amazing agencies and had help from two of the most amazing women.

1. Finding our Egg Donor

The first step in the process was to find an egg donor.

We spent months searching for the perfect egg donor — someone who shared similar traits with us that could provide half our child's genetics.

To do this, we worked with a fantastic online portal that let us take control of the selection process –  we were able to read bios and look at pictures of potential egg donors.

In the end, we found someone that we thought was a great fit for us.

We felt incredibly lucky to have found such a perfect match for our family. We were so grateful that this woman was willing to help us make our dreams

2. Selecting our Surrogate

The second step in the process was to find a surrogate to carry our embryo.

We had heard stories of how hard it was to find a surrogate and that made us both very nervous.

But we were lucky enough to be connected with an amazing agency. I would recommend WCOB if you are looking.

They worked extremely hard to help us narrow down our list of potential surrogates and eventually found someone that we both felt incredibly comfortable with.

After a few months of getting to know her, she agreed to help us fulfill our dreams and became the most important part of creating our family — without her hard work and dedication, it would have been impossible for us to have a baby.

We were connected with a modern-day superhero. A woman who was willing to sacrifice 9 months of her life, and her body, so we could grow our little bean…

3. And SO MUCH MORE… and it’s all on YouTube!

The whole process is complicated, and there were a lot of small obstacles that we had to overcome along the way.

I talked about our entire journey on my YouTube channel in my “Gay Dads Make a Baby” series.

It goes through the process of finding an egg donor and selecting a surrogate, as well as all the legal aspects involved in surrogacy.

I also talk about my own personal experience and how it felt to go through this journey.

If you’re considering going down the path of surrogacy, I highly encourage you to check out my videos before making a decision.

It’s an amazing journey, but it’s not for everyone.

My husband and I are so lucky that we were able to create our family through surrogacy—it was truly the experience of a lifetime.

Final Thoughts on Our Journey

Remember that old saying ”It takes a village to raise a child”?

Well in our case, it took a village to make a child, and I just want to take a second to thank everyone involved.

I literally can’t say it enough.

To the agencies – thank you, we would have never been able to navigate all of the red tape when it comes to surrogacy laws

To our egg donor you will forever be a part of our lives and our daughters life. We are so lucky to be sharing this special connection with such a selfless and amazing person.

To our surrogate – you sacrificed yourself, so we could have the family we always dreamed of. You are amazing. We will always be connected, and we are so fortunate to know you, and are constantly in awe of your selflessness.
